With the holiday season approaching, there are many opportunities to give back to our communities. Supporting a cause or local organization is an excellent way to be involved in something that matters beyond ourselves. It’s also a chance for you to connect and communicate with others. 

Here are some ways to weave serving your community into the fabric of how you network and collaborate with others at this time of year and all year long:

  • You may notice that clients, referral sources and friends of your firm are giving back and perhaps have been all year. Seize the moment by congratulating them for their service in the community. React to their social media posts, send a personal email or make a phone call to recognize the difference they’re making. You can also make it a point to support their causes through a donation, volunteering, etc. Those in your network will appreciate seeing you’ve not only taken into consideration a cause that matters to them, but also chosen to contribute in some way. 

  • People like to have something in common with someone else, and giving back is a nice similarity to have with others. Being a member of a board or nonprofit committee is a great way to expand your network. You never know where you may find an opportunity to help someone on the work side as well. 

  • Collaborate with your clients and those in your network to give back together. This could, for example, take the form of an organized service event, a goods drive or a mutually made donation. No matter how you choose to collaborate to serve others, it’s a nice opportunity to connect outside of work while also contributing to the community.

  • This tip is perhaps the simplest: Get out there and support a cause, whether it’s as an individual or your firm at large. Ideas include organizing a service day with your firm, working with an organization that brings service projects to you virtually, hosting a fundraiser, making a monetary donation, sponsoring a nonprofit’s annual gala event and looking at holiday wish lists and making a contribution. Also, be sure to spread the word about your support so that other people will engage and give back to the organization as well! 

There are so many ways to incorporate serving your community into your firm’s initiatives. And when you can bring others into the fold to support causes that matter, the more the merrier. ‘Tis the season for giving back and growing your network while doing so!
